Hello Everyone,

Trust everyone is having a Happy New Year.

This Saturday, Feb. 8th, 2014 at 2 pm, we are partnering with the Historic Dryborough Neighborhood Association and other organizations to present a program "Historic Dryborough, A Forgotten Town."  In 1806, Dryborough was the second incorporated town in Craven County.  Please see the attached press release for more info.  The event is free and open to the public at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library.  We look forward to seeing you there.

On Saturday, Feb. 8th, 2014 from 9 am to 12 Noon, the Colonial Branch of the English Speaking Union will host the 20th Annual Area High School Students Shakespeare Competition at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library.  Come hear the words of the Bard.  It is free and open to the public.  Please visit the ESU website to learn more:  http://www.esuus.org/colonialnc/

On Tuesday, Feb. 11th, 2014 at 7 pm, the Craven County Genealogical Society's program at the New Bern LDS Church will be "What is a Clerk," presented by Ms. Terri W. Sharpe, Clerk of Superior Court of Craven County.  She will give some highlights about the structure and duties at the Clerk's office.  She will also talk about the Estates division, information they have, how estates are administered, how wills are filed and safeguarded, and about public terminals for research.  It is free and open to the public.  Membership is encouraged.  Please see their website for more info:  www.CravenGenealogy.org

On Tuesday, Feb. 11th, 2014 at 7 pm, the Ancestor Seekers of Farmville will host historian Mr. Bill Kittrell at the Farmville Public Library for a program "Genealogy and Local History with Bill Kittrell."  All interested in genealogy and local history are encourage to attend this free event.  Mr. Kittrell is a wealth of information about Pitt County and surrounding areas.  Please see their website for more info:  http://farmvillelibrary.org/genealogy
On Wednesday, Feb. 12th, 2014 at 11:30 am, the New Bern Historical Society's February Lunch & Learn at The Chelsea Restaurant will feature Mrs. Carol Bonner Becton, a retired educator and native New Bernian, who will speak about "African American Inventors."  Please see their website for more info about making a luncheon reservation: http://newbernhistorical.org/lunch-and-learn/ 

On Wednesday, Feb. 12th, 2014 at 7 pm, the New Bern Civil War Roundtable's topic is the "35th Virginia Calvary" and will meet at the New Bern Fireman's Museum, 410 Hancock Street.  It is free and open to the public.  Membership is encouraged.  For more info, contact Mr. Pete Meyer at 252.670.3678 or pjmeyer42@suddenlink.net .

On Thursday, Feb. 13th, 2014 at 7 pm, the Heritage Genealogical Society which serves Greene, Jones, and Lenoir will host Mr. Dennis E. Jones, a retired educator and historian, who will talk about the "Kinston Hangings" that occurred during the War Between The States.  These men were former Confederate soldiers who had joined the Union Army and were captured at Beech Grove during the Battle of Batchelor's Creek in Craven County.  The HGS meets at Lenoir Community College in Kinston in the Heritage Place Library and Museum in the Learning Resources Center.  It is free and open to the public.  Membership is encouraged.  Please see their website for more info:  http://heritage.lenoircc.edu/heritageplace/index.htm

On Tuesday, Feb. 18th, 2014 at 7 pm, the Pitt County Family Researchers will host their monthly "Genealogy Roundtable" at the Sheppard Memorial Library at 530 Evans Street, Greenville.  It is free and open to the public.  Membership is encouraged.  Please see their website for more info:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncpcfr/

On Thursday, Feb. 20th, 2014 at 7 pm, the Greene County Family Researchers will meet at the Greene County Museum. The speaker for the evening will be Mr. Victor T. Jones, Jr.  Victor is the Special Collections Librarian at the Kellenberger Room at the New Bern- Craven County Public Library.  His program will be about "Genealogy records involving children (apprentice bonds, guardian bonds, school records, and bastardy bonds)."  He will also speak about the records available in the Kellenberger Room. On Thursday, Feb. 20th, 2014 at 7 pm, Tryon Palace will host Tami Tyree, an actress, historian, musicologist, and featured vocalist in the movie "12 Years a Slave," will help Tryon Palace celebrate Black History month with a musical lecture entitled "New York and the 19th-Century Slavery Question."  It is part of their monthly African American Lecture Series in Cullman Performance Hall and is free and open to the public.  Please see their website for more info:  http://www.tryonpalace.org/event_details.php?num=570

On Saturday, Feb. 23rd, 2014 at 2:30 pm, The New Bern-Craven County Public Library will host the 5th Annual Black History Month Celebration.  This year’s theme is God Is Trying To Tell You Something.  Hosted by Terris Lovelle, the program will feature poetry, biography, skits and praise and worship dance. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Hayden H. On Monday, Feb. 24th, 2014 at 7 pm, the Pamlico County Historical Association will host a book signing for Mrs. Marva Fisher Baldwin, retired educator, and her daughter, Mrs. Dawn Baldwin Gibson, a current educator, who together have written "a book of true family stories passed down through the generations about their ancestors who were slaves in Eastern North Carolina."  The last time they spoke to the PCHA it was standing room only.  It is free and open to the public.  Please see their website for more info:  www.PamlicoCountyHistoryMuseum.com

On Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 at 11:30 am, the New Bern Historical Society's March Lunch & Learn at The Chelsea Restaurant will feature Mr. Skip Riddle, historian, who will speak about "Where have all the young men gone … Searching for the Fallen" about what happened to those who fought and died in the Battle of New Bern, March 14, 1862. On Saturday, March 15th, 2014, the Family History Society of Eastern North Carolina will celebrate our 4th Anniversary and will feature Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle, Professor of History at UNC-Wilmington.  Dr. Fonvielle is a noted Civil War historian and a descendant of the French Huguenots who settled Craven County in the early 1700s.  Please sign-up for our email newsletter at www.ENCFamilies.org to be notified once we have the final details.
